Supervisor Scott Haggarty Sells Out to Gun Grabbers....
by Mark Fulford
The Alameda County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday April 22, 1997, to prohibit the sale of so-called “junk guns.”
I felt compelled to contact Scott Haggerty, to find out what happened to our pro-gun supervisor. The following is a summary of a April 23, telephone conversation:
I introduced myself by name, and as a volunteer during his “96” election campaign. Haggerty acknowledged that he remembered me. I asked Haggerty why he supported the gun ban. Haggerty began to explain the "POLITICAL REALITY” of the situation. Haggerty claimed the ban would have passed anyway with a 4 to 1 vote. He wanted to work with the other supervisors on the gun ban, expecting in return, they would work with him on the gun show ordinance. In an attempt to pacify me, Haggerty described the ban as “NOT SO BAD,” because the guns on the list may be appealed to a “REPUBLICAN SHERIFF.” I asked Haggerty what kind of message does the unanimous vote send, considering the way the media can sway public opinion, and was he aware of what is happening in Livermore. Haggerty replied that he was well aware of what is happening in Livermore, and that he wished that Tuesday’s vote could have come after the issue was settled in Livermore. I pointed out to Haggerty that the pro gun advocates who voted for him are counting on him to take a stand. Haggerty: “I hope you understand what I’m trying to do - I’m trying to get the best deal possible on the gun show ordinance.” Haggerty defined his political move as an “END-AROUND” I assured Haggerty that I was not at all happy. (End of call.)
Note: During Haggerty’s “96” election campaign, Haggerty and I communicated several times regarding gun issues. Haggerty pledged that he believes in the right to keep and bear arms and acknowledged that many pro gun advocates were volunteers on his campaign staff.
How soon they forget . . .
